Pulmonary Program Overview

When it comes to diseases and conditions affecting the lungs, people across South Florida — and beyond — choose Mount Sinai Medical Center for our compassionate pulmonary care team and their application of cutting-edge medical treatments and technologies, so patients can breathe easier.

Mount Sinai has a long history of delivering advanced pulmonary care, dating back to the origins of modern pulmonology. Perhaps the most famous and respected pulmonologist of all time, Marvin Sackner, who pioneered the transition from pulmonology’s narrow focus on tuberculosis to a modern approach based on lung structure, began his career at Mount Sinai on Miami Beach. Today, the pulmonary medicine specialists at Mount Sinai honor his legacy by pushing the boundaries of pulmonology, integrating sleep medicine into lung patients’ care, and bringing pulmonary expertise to critical care cases — in the ICU and the emergency department.

In addition, Mount Sinai operates a robust training program for physicians specializing in pulmonary medicine. Our Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and follows the guidelines of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP).

These points of pride helped Mount Sinai Medical Center earn the distinction as one of the only hospitals in Miami-Dade named among Healthgrades’ top 5% of hospitals in the United States.

An International, Multidisciplinary Approach

Mount Sinai’s team of pulmonologists works closely with fellow physicians from other medical specialties to deliver the best patient outcomes possible. This includes collaboration with colleagues within the divisions of thoracic surgery, oncology, sleep medicine and, of course, critical care. Our pulmonologists deliver care to patients at Mount Sinai’s flagship hospital on Miami Beach, in our 99-bed ICU, at our three emergency centers, and at outpatient clinics throughout South Florida.
