Volunteer Services

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Mount Sinai. Our team of volunteers plays a vital role in helping to carry out Mount Sinai Medical Center’s mission of providing high-quality health care to our diverse community, enhanced through teaching, research, charity care, and financial responsibility.

Our volunteers offer their time and talent in a variety of ways, working to improve the patient, family, and caregiver experience.

Volunteer Application Process and Requirements

  • Complete Application — The first step is to submit an application (details can be found below under Apply to Become a Volunteer).
  • Interview Via Zoom — Once your application is reviewed, someone from Volunteer Services will contact you via email to schedule a virtual interview date and time.
  • Complete an Online Background Check — After completing the volunteer application, you will receive separate instructions via email (on behalf of Mount Sinai Medical Center) regarding the next steps for completing and submitting your background check.
  • Submit One Recommendation Form — Once your form is completely filled out and signed, email it to VolunteerServices@msmc.com (the form must be completed by a nonrelative). Please find two versions of the document below:

Additional Requirements

Health:

  • Annual tuberculosis test
  • Proof of MMR and varicella vaccines
  • Proof of flu vaccine or eligible exemption (during flu season, Oct-April)
  • Tdap (only for maternal-child and ED)
  • Drug screening

For high school student volunteers

  • Minimum of 16 years of age
  • Parental permission required if under 18
  • Provide a copy of the most recent report card

Orientation Information

  • Orientation will take place at Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Main Campus on your assigned date.
  • All volunteers will receive a uniform and ID badge, which must be worn while on duty.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

People who are 16 years of age or older with a strong affinity to the medical center. This can include college students, high school students, professionals, grateful patients and family members, donors, and retirees.

  • In order to become a volunteer, each applicant must undergo an onboarding process that involves completion of an online application, personal interview, recommendation letter, background check, medical clearance, and orientation. (Please refer to the detailed requirements above.)
  • All volunteers must be fluent in English (verbal and written).

The minimum age of a volunteer is 16 years old.

  • Volunteers must commit to a 12-month volunteer period and at least 100 service hours.
  • Volunteers are required to serve one 4-hour shift per week with a maximum of 20 hours per week.
  • Contribution to the mission of the hospital
  • The satisfaction of helping patients, their families, and hospital staff
  • Complimentary meals (in most locations with cafeterias)
  • Free parking
  • Volunteer recognition

Mount Sinai Medical Center does not accept applications from those seeking to complete court-ordered community service hours.
