History
Mount Sinai Medical Center was established in 1949 by a group of philanthropists and concerned citizens with two goals in mind: to make health care services readily available to all people, regardless of race, color or creed, or their ability to pay; and to create a hospital where physicians would be allowed to practice medicine without fear of discrimination. Over 75 years later, we are proud to remain a not-for-profit hospital that provides vital health care services to all citizens. Through the years, we have steadily gained the expertise, resources, and facilities necessary to serve an ever-expanding population of people in need.
Today, Mount Sinai, the only hospital on Miami Beach, is a 664-bed hospital with 16 satellite centers, including freestanding emergency centers in Aventura, Hialeah, and our newest site in Westchester to open in October 2026. With approximately 771 affiliated clinicians and 5,000+ employees, we are the largest private, independent, not-for-profit teaching hospital in South Florida.

We continue to work hard to make a positive difference in our communities by offering vital medical services, providing uncompensated care to those in need through a multitude of outreach and support programs, and by hosting free community lectures and health screenings. In addition to being one of the original statutory teaching hospitals in the state, Mount Sinai is making an impact at the regional and national levels through our active medical training and research programs. Mount Sinai is the hospital of choice for those who seek the level of expertise and care that only a teaching hospital can provide.

As the largest private, independent, not-for-profit teaching hospital in South Florida, our Centers of Excellence combine technology, research, and academics to provide innovative, comprehensive care. And as Mount Sinai continues to grow, so does our legacy of caring.
Community Outreach Programs
As part of our ongoing efforts to better serve our community, we continue to offer a range of outreach activities, including free lectures and health screenings.
Education and Health Screenings
Information is the key to leading a healthy life. And as a not-for-profit teaching hospital, we are committed to investing in our community and providing beneficial outreach that aims to help people live better, healthier lives. With that goal in mind, we provide free health screenings throughout Miami-Dade, increasing opportunities for people to identify their risk factors and make informed medical decisions. An example of which were vascular screening events that we held throughout the community to provide more education about carotid arteries, circulation, and how to lower the risk of heart attack or stroke.
Mount Sinai also offers a series of free educational lectures on a variety of medical topics, including cancer, cardiovascular health, nutrition, stress management, Alzheimer’s disease, and stroke prevention. Lectures are typically offered in the communities of Aventura, Bal Harbour, Hialeah, Marathon, Miami Beach, Miami Lakes, Miami Springs, North Miami, Sunny Isles Beach, and Key West.
Mount Sinai Community Relations Group
The Community Relations Group provides opportunities for Mount Sinai’s employees to give back to the community at large. The group participates in activities such as food drives, toy drives, school supply drives, community parades, holiday celebrations, Miami Beach PRIDE events, and hurricane relief drives.
Community CPR Training
Mount Sinai offers public CPR classes on its main campus and participates in area events that offer the training as well. We also offer an Infant CPR and Safety enrichment course that covers resuscitation basics for infants from birth to 1 year old. The session also includes tips for new parents on infant safety, the proper use of car seats, and baby-proofing their home.
Patient Support Groups and Caregiver Training Programs
Mount Sinai provides vital community programs and support groups throughout the community. We offer English and Spanish support groups and caregiver training sessions, where we also provide information on how to best care for a person suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory loss. To help patients and their families who are living with cancer, Mount Sinai even offers a number of patient, caregiver, and bereavement support groups at both the Main Campus and Aventura Cancer Centers.
Community Health Needs Assessment
Mount Sinai collaborated with three other Miami-Dade community stakeholders to complete the 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment in compliance with 501(r) of the Internal Revenue Code. The same key stakeholders will once again be collaborating to complete a new Community Health Needs Assessment by the end of 2026. The methodology of this report follows the recommendations of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics. The report includes statistical data and scholarly opinions from a variety of federal, state, and local government health agencies, as well as from private organizations and community stakeholders. We sought additional input from people representing the broad interests of the community and local health experts via public meetings, interviews, and an online assessment survey.
