History
Mount Sinai Medical Center was established in 1949 by a group of philanthropists and concerned citizens with two goals in mind: To make healthcare services readily available to all people, regardless of race, color or creed, or their ability to pay, and to create a hospital where physicians would be allowed to practice medicine without fear of discrimination. Approximately 73 years later, we are proud to remain a not-for-profit hospital that provides vital health care services to all citizens. Through the years, we have steadily gained the expertise, resources and facilities necessary to serve an ever-expanding population of people in need.
Today, Mount Sinai, the only hospital on Miami Beach, is a 664-bed hospital with 11 satellite centers, including freestanding emergency centers in Aventura and Hialeah. With more than 760+ physicians/practitioners and 4,300+ employees, we are the largest private independent not-for-profit teaching hospital in South Florida. Through our partnership with New York’s prestigious Columbia University, we offer the only Ivy League-affiliated programs in South Florida through the Mount Sinai Heart Institute, Columbia University Division of Urology, Columbia University Division of Orthopedics and Mount Sinai’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. We continue to work hard to make a positive difference in our communities by offering vital medical services, providing uncompensated care to those in need through a multitude of outreach and support programs, and by hosting free community lectures and health screenings. In addition, as one of 18 statutory teaching hospitals in the state, Mount Sinai also is making an impact at the regional and national levels through our active medical training and research programs. As Mount Sinai continues to grow, so does our legacy of caring.
Our Impact
Mount Sinai is the largest private, independent, not-for-profit teaching hospital in South Florida. Our Centers of Excellence combine technology, research and academics to provide innovative, comprehensive care. One of the original statutory teaching hospitals in the state of Florida, Mount Sinai is the hospital of choice for those who seek the level of expertise and care that only a teaching hospital can provide.
Community Outreach Programs
As part of our ongoing efforts to better serve our community, we continue to offer a range of outreach activities, including free lectures and health screenings.
Education and Health Screenings
As a not-for-profit teaching hospital, we are committed to investing in our community and providing beneficial outreach aimed at helping people live better, healthier lives. Information is the key to leading a healthy life. With that goal in mind, we provide free health screenings
throughout Miami-Dade aimed at helping people identify their risk factors and make informed medical decisions. An example of which were, vascular screening events were held throughout the community to provide education about carotid arteries, circulation, lower risk of heart attack or stroke.
Mount Sinai also offers a series of free educational lectures on a variety of medical issues, including cardiovascular health, nutrition, stress management and stroke prevention. Lectures are typically offered in the communities of Aventura, Bal Harbour, Hialeah, Marathon, Miami Beach, Miami Lakes, Miami Springs, North Miami and Sunny Isles Beach.
Mount Sinai C.A.R.E.S.
Formed in 2008, the Community Activities Reflecting Employee Service, or C.A.R.E.S., program provides opportunities for Mount Sinai employees to give back to the community at large. The C.A.R.E.S. committee participates in activities such as food drives, toy drives, school supply drives, community parades and holiday celebrations, Miami Beach PRIDE events, and hurricane relief drives.
Community CPR Training
Mount Sinai offers public CPR classes on its main campus and participates in area events that offer the training as well. We also offer a non-certification Infant CPR and Safety course that covers resuscitation basics for infants from birth to one year old. The session also includes tips for new parents on infant safety, the proper use of car seats, and baby-proofing their home.
Patient Support Groups and Caregiver Training Programs
Mount Sinai provides vital community programs and support groups throughout the community. We offer support groups and caregiver training sessions, both English and Spanish, where individuals are provided with information on how to best care for a person suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory loss. To help patients and their families who are living with cancer, Mount Sinai offers a number of patient, caregiver, and bereavement support groups at both the Main Campus and Aventura Cancer Centers.
Community Health Needs Assessment
Mount Sinai recently collaborated with three other Miami-Dade community stakeholders to complete a Community Health Needs Assessment in compliance with 501(r) of the Internal Revenue Code. The methodology of this report follows the recommendations of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics. The report includes statistical data and scholarly opinions from a variety of federal, state and local government health agencies and from private organizations and community stakeholders. Additional input was sought from people representing the broad interests of the community as well as local health experts via public meetings, interviews and an online assessment survey.
