About Dr. Juan-Carlos Brenes

Juan-Carlos Brenes, MD, FACC, FASE, FACP is a full time cardiologist and assistant professor with Columbia University in the Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He joined Mount Sinai as the Co-Director of the Non-Invasive Echocardiography Laboratory in August 2010. He also became the Director for the Cardiology Fellowship Training Program in 2013, and Co-Director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic. Prior to this, he was a staff cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Florida, where he also served as Director of the Lipid Clinic.
A native of San Jose, Costa Rica, Dr. Brenes graduated from the University of Costa Rica School of Medicine. He also attended the University of Miami, where he studied Internal Medicine as part of the prestigious Harrington Medical Training Program, which selects the top medical students in Latin America. He completed his internship, residency and general Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital; and he was selected as the best Cardiology Fellow of his graduating class. Dr. Brenes subsequently completed an Advanced Echocardiography Fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. During his time at Columbia University, he won the Tenth Annual Joan Barber Memorial Research Award of the New York Echocardiography Society. He also lectured in the Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging course of the Columbia University Biomedical Engineering Department.
Dr. Brenes has published book chapters, presented abstracts in national and international meetings, and published in peer-reviewed journals. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography. He specializes in the diagnosis of valvular heart disease (mitral valve prolapse, mitral regurgitation, aortic stenosis), advanced echocardiography and 3D-imaging, as well as preventive cardiology and hypertension. He has lectured both nationally and internationally in the field of valvular heart disease. Dr. Brenes is board certified in cardiology and echocardiography.
