Male Fertility Services
Starting or expanding a family doesn’t always happen as expected, and for many men, the reason is not always clear. In many cases, however, underlying issues can be identified and treated with the right expertise.
At Mount Sinai Medical Center, our Male Fertility Services focus on identifying the root cause of infertility in men and delivering targeted, effective solutions. We bring together fellowship-trained male reproductive urologists who offer comprehensive evaluations and individualized care plans to support men across the continuum of fertility care.
Our experts work closely with women’s fertility specialists, including IVF clinics, to provide coordinated, multidisciplinary care that ensures both partners are aligned in their treatment approach. Whether you are just beginning to explore your options or considering surgical or hormonal treatment, our team is here to guide you with clarity, professionalism, and respect.
Our Process
Mount Sinai’s Male Fertility Services serve a broad spectrum of patients, from younger men who want to better understand their reproductive health to those exploring options after a vasectomy. Many patients come to us directly, without a referral, making it easier for men to seek evaluation and understand their options at an earlier stage. Once our team completes a thorough and precise diagnosis, we develop a personalized care plan that takes into account your medical history, goals, lifestyle, and overall health. Our fellowship-trained microsurgical specialists utilize advanced, state-of-the-art techniques to help achieve the best possible outcomes, providing expert, compassionate care at every step of your journey.Treatments and Services
Our program for men offers a full range of treatments to support reproductive challenges. We personalize each care plan based on the patient’s individual needs and goals.
Hormone Management
Hormones play a key role in sperm production and overall reproductive function. Imbalances such as low testosterone, elevated prolactin, or prior testosterone therapy can reduce sperm count and negatively impact fertility.
To evaluate these concerns, our urologists assess key hormone levels to help identify underlying causes affecting reproductive health. Treatment is then tailored to address these imbalances and support natural sperm production when possible.
Our team will continue to closely monitor your progress in restoring your reproductive function and ensure your treatment plan is effectively producing the desired results.
Varicocele Repair
Enlarged veins in the testicle, known as varicoceles, can impair sperm quality and sometimes cause discomfort. Surgery is an effective way to address this condition.
The procedure involves tying off the affected veins using a high-powered operating microscope while preserving the surrounding structures. This microsurgical approach allows for greater precision and is associated with lower recurrence rates and fewer complications compared to traditional techniques.
After surgery, the vast majority of patients see significant improvements in sperm while often helping to relieve discomfort. The procedure is performed through a very small incision (less than 1 inch), and patients can often return to work the next day and resume normal activities within a few days.
Vasectomy Reversal
A vasectomy reversal can offer men a renewed opportunity to pursue fatherhood. This surgery reconnects the vas deferens—two tubes in the male reproductive system that carry sperm from the testes to the urethra during ejaculation—to restore the flow of sperm.
Success rates vary depending on factors such as scar tissue and the time since the original vasectomy was performed. However, when the reversal is performed within five years, success rates can be as high as 90%. The procedure is also minimally invasive, with incisions typically measuring just a few millimeters on each side.
What to Expect
We guide you through every stage of your care, ensuring you understand what to expect. From the initial evaluation through treatment and follow-up, our team works with you to make informed decisions and pursue the approach best suited to your goals.
Pre-Treatment Evaluation
During your first consultation, we review your medical history, evaluate factors that may affect reproductive function, and outline options that can directly address your fertility situation. You will leave with a clear understanding of the next steps and what each treatment option involves.
Microsurgical Treatment
If surgery is recommended, our fellowship-trained microsurgical specialists explain the procedure in clear terms and perform it using advanced techniques. This approach addresses the underlying issue while minimizing impact on surrounding tissues, providing a strong foundation for improved outcomes.
Recovery and Follow-Up Care
After any procedure, we provide detailed instructions on healing and the types of activity that are appropriate as you recover. During follow-up visits, we monitor progress, evaluate changes in reproductive health, and adjust treatment as needed. Our team remains available to answer questions and provide ongoing support.
