Medical Genetics Overview
All human beings have a unique genetic code that determines their physical attributes and also affects their personality and behavior. These codes are stored in chromosomes, made up of DNA molecules held within every cell in our bodies. Each chromosome has hundreds to thousands of distinct segments of DNA molecules called genes. Each gene is responsible for multiple functions that determine specific traits or characteristics.
However, some of these genes can change – or mutate – and the new code can negatively affect regular functions from protecting against cancer to creating healthy tissue. These mutations can occur when genes are formed, or they can be passed along from one generation to the next.
Our team of geneticists look to identify hereditary cancers, connective tissue disorders, cardiovascular syndromes, and diseases that affect how we process certain nutrients. Through early detection, we are better positioned to manage symptoms, assess long-term risk, and empower patients to make informed healthcare decisions.
Leading our team is Irman Forghani, MD, FACMG, Director of Genetics and a double board-certified expert in the field of medical genetics. Dr. Forghani is renowned for her expertise in adult-onset genetic disorders and guides a multidisciplinary team of medical geneticists, genetic counselors, infusion nurses, and other specialists. Together, they provide comprehensive evaluations, genetic counseling, personalized care plans, long-term management, monitoring for disease progression, and coordinated support for all related health issues, ensuring each patient receives holistic, ongoing care.
