Prostate Conditions
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH/Enlarged Prostate)
What is BPH?
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as benign prostatic hypertrophy, is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that commonly occurs with age. As the prostate grows, it can compress the urethra and interfere with normal urine flow, leading to urinary symptoms that range from mild to bothersome.
Our urologists assess each patient to determine whether monitoring, medication, or a procedure will provide the most appropriate relief.
Symptoms Of BPH
Symptoms of an enlarged prostate may include:
- Difficulty starting to urinate
- Weak or interrupted urinary stream
- Sensation of incomplete bladder emptying
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Urinary urgency or leakage
- Urinary retention in more advanced cases
How We Treat BPH At Mount Sinai
We tailor treatment to each patient, starting with conservative approaches and progressing only as needed. The goal is to relieve symptoms while preserving urinary and sexual function.
- Medication Therapy
- We prescribe medications to relax prostate and bladder muscles or reduce prostate size for men with mild to moderate symptoms.
- Minimally Invasive Procedures
- When medication does not provide adequate relief, minimally invasive therapies may be used to improve urinary flow and reduce recovery time, including:
- Rezum – Uses water vapor to shrink excess prostate tissue and improve urinary flow
- Thermotherapy – Applies controlled heat to reduce prostate size and relieve urinary symptoms
- UroLift System – Uses small implants to lift and hold enlarged prostate tissue out of the way of the urethra without removing tissue
- Surgical Treatment
- For patients who need surgery, we offer advanced options, including:
- Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) – Removes obstructive prostate tissue and restores urinary flow
- Laser-based therapies – Precisely removes excess prostate tissue

Our urologists guide patients through each treatment option with clear explanations and support to help them make informed decisions.
Prostatitis
What Is Prostatitis?
Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate gland that can develop suddenly or persist as a chronic condition. Causes may include bacterial infection, inflammation without infection, pelvic muscle dysfunction, or nerve-related pain. Prostatitis can affect men at any age.
Symptoms Of Prostatitis
Prostatitis may cause:
- Pelvic, perineal, or lower back pain
- Painful or difficult urination
- Urinary urgency or frequency
- Painful ejaculation or sexual dysfunction
- Fever and chills in acute bacterial cases
- Blood in the urine or semen
Because symptoms may persist or recur, thorough evaluation is essential.
How We Treat Prostatitis At Mount Sinai
We start treatment by identifying the underlying causes and contributing factors. Care is personalized and often combines multiple therapies to address the complexity of the condition.
Treatment options include:
- Antibiotics for confirmed bacterial infections
- Alpha-blockers and anticholinergic medications for urinary issues
- Pelvic floor physical therapy to address muscle dysfunction
- Natural anti-inflammatories for noninfectious prostatic inflammation
Our goal is to reduce symptoms, improve quality of life, and help men return to daily activities with confidence, knowing they have a dedicated team supporting them.
