Dr Eric Weiss

Mount Sinai Medical Center proudly announces the appointment of Eric S. Weiss, MD, MPH, as President of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) and joining Steve Xydas, MD, Chief of Cardiac Surgery, as Co-Director of Valve Surgery. He began his tenure at the beginning of June.

Dr. Weiss, a nationally recognized leader in heart surgery, brings an extraordinary blend of surgical expertise, academic achievement, and clinical leadership to South Florida’s premier cardiovascular program. The arrival of Dr. Weiss will play a pivotal role in advancing Mount Sinai’s regional and national reputation in cardiovascular care, particularly in the area of minimally invasive mitral valve and aortic procedures. According to the latest report from the Agency for Health Care Administration, surgeons at Mount Sinai performed more than 9,000 heart procedures in 2024 alone, more than any other hospital in the region.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Weiss’ commitment to innovation, patient outcomes, and surgical excellence to Mount Sinai,” says Gino R. Santorio, President and CEO of Mount Sinai Medical Center. “With his added leadership, we are confident our cardiovascular program will continue to set the standard for care in South Florida and beyond.”

Before joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Weiss led the Structural Heart Program and Aortic Center at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee, where his team earned a prestigious three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He has performed over 6,000 successful cardiac surgeries and is widely recognized as one of the nation’s top valve surgeons. Dr. Weiss is best known for advancing techniques in minimally invasive mitral and aortic valve surgery, aortic dissection repair, and transcatheter therapies, refining these procedures to reduce operative time, accelerate recovery, and improve patient outcomes.

Dr. Weiss is a board-certified surgeon with expertise in nonintrusive treatments for complex diseases and conditions. He earned his medical degree and Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he completed his general surgery residency. During his training, he received multiple awards for clinical and technical excellence, notably the John L. Cameron Award for Technical Excellence in Surgery and the Gershon Efron Award for Outstanding Clinical Research. Dr. Weiss completed his advanced cardiothoracic training at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the University of Pennsylvania.

In addition to his clinical accomplishments, Dr. Weiss has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and delivered more than 80 medical presentations.
