Mount Sinai Performs First Percutaneous Tricuspid Valve Replacement
Our medical center’s interventional cardiology team recently achieved a major milestone with our first percutaneous tricuspid valve replacements, a breakthrough procedure offering new treatment options for patients who are too high-risk for open-heart surgery.
Led by Dr. Nirat Beohar, Director of Interventional Cardiology, and Dr. Andres Palomo, Interventional Cardiologist, the procedures were performed in collaboration with Dr. Angelo La Pietra, Director of Surgical Electrophysiology; Dr. Rafle Fernandez, Associate Director of Clinical Echocardiography; and Dr. Sofia Horvath Adam, Cardiologist.
The new transcatheter technique allows physicians to replace the diseased valve through a small catheter inserted in the leg, eliminating the need for open-heart surgery. Each procedure was completed in approximately 45 minutes, and both patients are recovering well.
“This represents a major advancement in structural heart care,” said Dr. Beohar. “For the first time, we can offer patients who were previously deemed inoperable a minimally invasive solution that can dramatically improve their quality of life.”
Tricuspid valve disease has long been one of the most challenging cardiac conditions to treat due to surgical risk and poor outcomes with medical therapy alone. The success of these procedures reinforces our medical center’s role as a regional leader in minimally invasive and structural heart innovation, alongside other advanced therapies such as TAVR, MitraClip, and Watchman.
