Innovation Through Research: Koning Vera Breast CT

At the Lila and Harold Menowitz Comprehensive Breast Center, Stuart S. Kaplan, MD, Chief, Section of Breast Imaging, Breast Ultrasound and MRI, and Breast Interventional Procedures, is leading an investigational study evaluating the Koning Vera Breast CT.

Mount Sinai Medical Center is currently the only hospital-based comprehensive Breast Center in Florida with this imaging system available and is believed to be the only center in the United States currently conducting a comparative study.

The system is a next-generation, true 3D breast-imaging technology designed to improve comfort, accuracy, and early detection, particularly in women with dense breast tissue.

The aim of this study is to compare diagnostic accuracy and clinical performance of the Koning Vera Breast CT with traditional mammography and MRI. As of October 2025, Dr. Kaplan and his team have enrolled 18 patients and are expecting at least 6 more to join.

Studies like these are critical — 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and utilizing the most accurate technology allows patients with earlier detection. Earlier detection means better outcomes, increased survival rates, and reduction of invasive treatments.

The Koning Vera Breast CT also provides greater insights for women with dense breast tissue. Breast density is a key factor in identifying potential tumors, as the tissue will often obstruct cancers on mammograms. The CT’s 360° 3-D view can create a full image of the area, often revealing lesions that otherwise may have been missed.
