    Dr. Eric S. Weiss is the President of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) and Co-Director of Valve Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

    Dr. Weiss is a board-certified cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon specializing in treating valvular heart disease and conditions of the thoracic aorta. He earned his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, where he also earned his Master of Public Health and completed his general surgery residency training. He then completed his cardiothoracic surgery residency training at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University School of Medicine in New York, NY. During his general surgery residency, Dr. Weiss served as Chief Resident and earned the prestigious John L. Cameron Award for Technical Excellence in Surgery, the Anselm Talalay – Vincent Gott Prize in Cardiac Surgery, George D. Zuidema Resident Award for Basic Science Research, and the Gershon Efron Award for Outstanding Clinical Research.

    Following residency, Dr. Weiss completed his heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support advanced fellowship training at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University School of Medicine. He then completed his advanced fellowship in aortic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. As a leading heart surgeon, Dr. Weiss has trained with the best cardiothoracic surgeons in the United States, further solidifying his ability to deliver outstanding, life-saving results. Devoted to advancing surgical education, he continues to share his expertise in minimally invasive techniques with surgeons worldwide.

    Before joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Weiss served as the surgical director for the Structural Heart Program and medical director of the Aurora Aortic Center, both of which are part of Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI. Dr. Weiss is highly skilled with extensive knowledge in precise, cutting-edge surgical techniques, prioritizing immediate and long-term cardiac health. Through his longstanding commitment to patient care, Dr. Weiss employs a trusting and supportive healing environment focused on comprehensive and minimally invasive interventions to facilitate post-operative recovery.

    As a nationally recognized leader in heart surgery, Dr. Weiss consistently achieves outcomes in the top 1-2% of surgeons nationwide across all categories. His leadership was pivotal in earning his previous program a three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons—an honor designated to the nation’s highest-performing surgical teams. Dr. Weiss continues to elevate cardiovascular operation standards while reaching new surgical heights.

    Dr. Weiss is recognized as one of the top valve surgeons in the country for the most widely implanted aortic valve, having performed over 6,000 successful surgeries throughout his distinguished career, many of which have been performed via tiny incisions, allowing for rapid recovery. Dr. Weiss has also revolutionized the aortic dissection procedure, reducing the operation time to two hours while significantly minimizing its invasiveness.

    Dr. Weiss is dedicated to advancing the treatment of complex valvular heart disease through minimally invasive approaches. He specializes in repairing native mitral, aortic, and tricuspid valves and often can treat multiple valve pathology in a minimally invasive manner.  He has further expertise in thoracic aortic diseases, specializing in innovative approaches such as ascending thoracic aneurysm repair, aortic valve preservation, valve-sparing aortic root replacement, hybrid and total arch reconstruction, minimally invasive aortic surgery, and cutting-edge endovascular therapies for thoracic aneurysms.

    Dr. Weiss has authored and co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications, contributed to book chapters, led clinical research studies, and given over 80 medical presentations on a variety of medical topics, including valvular heart disease, orthotopic heart transplantation, lung transplantation, aortic root and valve replacement, aortic valve implantation, tricuspid valve repair, cardiopulmonary bypass, left ventricular assist devices. Additionally, Dr. Weiss has served as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and Annals of Surgery.

    Dr. Weiss is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). He is a member of the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association, Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), Southern Thoracic Surgical Association (STSA), and Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society.
