Dr. Christos G. Mihos is a non-invasive cardiologist and echocardiographer with board certification in Cardiovascular Disease, level III board-certification in Adult Comprehensive Echocardiography, and Internal Medicine. Dr. Mihos serves as the Director of the Echocardiography & Non-Invasive Cardiovascular Laboratory at the Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. His academic appointments are as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Nova Southeastern University-College of Osteopathic Medicine.

A native of Boston, Massachusetts and of first generation Greek-American descent, Dr. Mihos earned his medical degree at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine (2012) and fellowship in cardiovascular disease (2015) at Mount Sinai Medical Center and subsequently completed a two-year fellowship in advanced echocardiography at Massachusetts General Hospital (2017), where he also served as a clinical research fellow at Harvard Medical School. Since 2019, Dr. Mihos has led the Echocardiography & Non-Invasive Cardiovascular Laboratory at our main hospital campus in Miami Beach, FL, and across our comprehensive satellite locations in South Florida in an empowering manner to provide the highest quality of patient care. With his leadership and mentoring, a large team of faculty, fellows, and sonographers perform and interpret advanced imaging techniques to support the division’s clinical, structural heart, and cardio-thoracic surgical programs, which includes transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms, 3D/4D image reconstruction, speckle-tracking stain imaging, and Cardio-Oncology, amongst many others.

Dr. Mihos has extensive experience in cardiovascular research and presents at national and international conferences. His primary academic focus is on the use of advanced strain echocardiography to study cardiac mechanics in health and disease, particularly as it relates to inherited and acquired cardiomyopathy, as well as valvular heart disease. Dr. Mihos was the lead author and committee co-chair of the first American Heart Association scientific statement on “Speckle-Tracking Strain Echocardiography for the Assessment of Left Ventricular Structure and Function”, which was published in the prestigious journal “Circulation”. He was the principal investigator of the grant-funded prospective “Impact of Fitness on Cardiac Torsion and Wall Mechanics in Ischemic Heart Disease Study (FIT-TWIST)”, which studied the effects of cardiac rehabilitation on cardiac structure and function after a myocardial infarction. Notably, Dr. Mihos collaborated with international cardiovascular imaging experts to create the GE Healthcare educational series ‘Vivid Learning Academy on Strain Imaging in Echocardiography’, which serves to advance the widespread adoption of strain echocardiography in clinical practice. He is a research mentor to medical students, residents, and fellows, and helps to maintain the academic excellence of Mount Sinai Medical Center.
