She earned her medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Puerto Rico. She completed her internal medicine residency at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. She also completed infectious disease and critical care medicine fellowships at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.

Dr. Berbel Caban’s clinical interests include infectious disease research and medical education. She is currently practicing as a critical care physician at Mount Sinai Medical Center.     In 2019, Dr. Berbel Caban was inducted into the nationally recognized Alpha Omega Alpha Medical School Honor Society at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and received a clinical abstract award from the Infectious Diseases Society of New York. She received Fellow of the Year award during her Critical Care Medicine graduation. She has presented at national infectious disease conferences, including IDWeek, and contributed to a study on nosocomial outbreaks using genomic epidemiology that was published in Genome Medicine. She also co-authored a book chapter on air contamination in hospital environments in Infection Prevention: New Perspectives and Controversies.
