Gynecologic Oncology

Preventing, Detecting, & Treating Gynecologic Cancers

In combination, gynecologic cancers are the third most commonly diagnosed types of cancers in the United States. As a result, researchers have committed tremendous resources to making historic advancements in preventing, detecting, and treating gynecologic disorders and diseases. In fact, widespread use of the Pap test to detect cervical cancer has exponentially reduced the incidence of this malignancy, which was once common among American women. More recently, the introduction of HPV vaccines, which target the virus that causes the majority of cervical cancers, has been hailed as one of the most significant public health advancements in the last five decades.
