    Dr. Fernando Safdie is Director of Endoluminal and Airway Surgery and Associate Director of Thoracic Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. He has been a staff cardiothoracic and foregut surgeon at Mount Sinai since 2018.

    Dr. Safdie cares for benign and malignant diseases of the chest, including the lungs, esophagus, pleura, trachea and airway, mediastinum, and chest wall. Foregut surgery is his subspecialty.

    Dr. Safdie has one of the most extensive robotic surgery experiences in South Florida, with more than 2,000 robotic cases completed.

    Dr. Safdie earned a combined BA/MD from the University of Buenos Aires, graduating summa cum laude. He was a post-doctoral research associate at the Andrus Gerontology Center at the University of Southern California from 2007 to 2010. He completed his surgical internship at Mount Sinai Medical Center and his general surgery residency at Cleveland Clinic Florida, where he served as Chief Resident and received the Senior Surgery Resident of the Year and Outstanding Performance in Surgical Research awards. He then completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship and a minimally invasive and advanced thoracic-foregut fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, where he received the STAR Award from VA Pittsburgh Healthcare Systems in 2016. In 2018 he was awarded the Graham Fellowship in robotic and minimally invasive surgery by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

    Dr. Safdie is board certified in general surgery and thoracic surgery. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons, a reviewer for the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and an editorial board member of the Annals of Esophagus.

    He has authored and co-authored numerous scientific papers and multiple book chapters. His research led to a clinical trial on dietary modification to decrease chemotherapy side effects in cancer patients.

    His recent honors include the Florida Heroes Award (2024), Best in Florida Magazine Excellence in Thoracic Surgery (2024), and the Top Thoracic and Foregut Surgeon and Top Cardiothoracic Surgeon Awards for South Florida (2021).

    Dr. Safdie is fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian.
