Dr. Jose Cruz is a prominent figure in South Florida behavioral health, currently serving as the Scottenstein Family Chair of Behavioral Health and Psychiatry Residency Program Director at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Dr. Cruz is a board-certified psychiatrist recognized by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Miami, Dr. Cruz earned his medical degree from the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic followed by psychiatry residency training at University Hospital in Stony Brook, NY.  Prior to joining Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2016, Dr. Cruz served as the Medical Director of University of Miami Hospital’s adult psychiatry units as well as maintaining a busy private practice.  He currently holds academic appointments as Assistant Professor at Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University, Nova University and New York Medical College.

    Dr. Jose Cruz leads a Department of Behavioral Health committed to clinical excellence, medical education and innovation.  He has built a strong multidisciplinary team committed to providing innovative care and access to the community.  He was directly involved in establishing the facility’s Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Program, offering a crucial option for patients with severe, treatment-resistant mental illnesses   Furthermore, Dr. Jose Cruz was a key figure in launching both the Long-Acting Injectable (LAI) Clinic and the Spravato Clinic, significantly improving medication adherence and providing novel options for managing depression. HIs work also includes the development of a Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) service line, broadening the scope of non-invasive treatment modalities available to patients.

    In a leadership capacity, Dr. Jose Cruz oversees the critical training and mentorship of psychiatric residents, ensuring the next generation of mental health professionals is well-equipped to manage complex patient needs. His role involves direct supervision and the application of evidence-based practices in a real-world clinical setting. In addition to his clinical, administrative, and educational roles, Dr. Jose Cruz serves as Chair of the Hospital Bio-Ethics Committee, where he leads efforts in resolving patient-doctor-family conflicts and guides the medical team in difficult medical ethical decisions.
