Calling About Patient Conditions

Family and friends can inquire about your condition. Callers will be told your condition is “good”, “fair”, or “serious” by a hospital representative as long as you have not opted out of the hospital's directory. If you have opted out of the hospital directory, then hospital personnel cannot not give any information including confirmation that you are a patient. Patients in intensive care are automatically listed as “serious.” Those in special surgical care units are listed as “fair,” and all others are listed as “good.” Mount Sinai representatives are unable to release any additional details regarding a patient’s condition unless authorized to do so by the patient.

If family members wish to learn more about your progress, they should consult your physician. Families should designate one spokesperson, who may call the ICU twice a day on their behalf. These calls should be placed from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
