(January 17, 2010 – Miami Beach, FL)

Dr. Joseph Lamelas, Mount Sinai Medical Center's Chief of Cardiac Surgery, has been named one of the Top 100 Influential Hispanics in Miami. Honorees are selected by a committee put together by 100 Latinos, the organization responsible for all nominees. Honorees are selected in both Miami and Madrid, with Miami being the only city in the United States to offer this prestigious distinction.

Honorees for Miami's Top 100 Influential Hispanics must meet certain criteria. They must be residents of Miami, contribute to the economic, social and cultural impact of the South Florida region, bring awareness to positive aspects of Latin culture and recognized as excellent in their respective professions.

Photos and bios of all 100 honorees are currently on display in Concourse D of Miami International Airport. The display, which went up in January, will be seen by almost 60,000 national and international travelers each day. Dr. Lamelas is part of an esteemed group that features other honorees such as Gloria Estefan, Romero Britto, Ricky Martin, Arturo Sandoval, Maria Celeste, Mario Kreutzberger (aka Don Francisco) and Cristina Saralegui to name a few.

Dr. Joseph Lamelas is a leading authority in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery having pioneered techniques in minimally invasive valve surgery that he now teaches to surgeons around the world. He has performed more than 8,000 open-heart procedures in his career and currently has the highest volume of cardiac surgeries than any other surgeon in Florida. He also has the best results and outcomes in all of South Florida for high-volume, complex cases.

"I became a surgeon because I wanted to do something that would have an immediate impact on the health of our community. It's very gratifying for me to give my patient back the quality of life they deserve," said Lamelas.

Dr. Lamelas is board certified in Surgical Critical Care and as a cardiac and thoracic surgeon. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American College of Cardiology, American College of Chest Physicians, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and former President of the Cuban Surgical Society. He has published numerous articles on cardiac surgery and is co-director of the Mount Sinai Heart Institute, a partnership with New York's Columbia University.
