Mammography is considered the best screening tool for breast cancer. Several different medical societies and associations, including the American Cancer Society, recommend an annual screening mammography for women age 40 and older – research shows that annual screenings can lead to early detection of breast cancer. Mammography is used both to screen healthy women and to further evaluate women who are experiencing symptoms of possible breast disease.
Mammography uses low-dose X-rays to image the breasts. During the procedure, each breast is compressed and X-ray pictures are taken from several angles. The best time to schedule a mammogram is one week after your period.
