Program Overview

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a multidisciplinary department offering a broad range of patient testing designed to provide rapid, quality test results to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of the varied patient population served in our institution. The laboratory offers an extensive test menu to assist the medical staff in the diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases appropriate to the Hospital’s Plan of Care. Tests are performed on site or referred to a Reference Laboratory that has been selected for the quality of testing and timeliness of result reporting.

On site services include: Core Lab (Hematology and Chemistry), Microbiology, Serology, Immunology, Blood Banking, Cytology, Histology, Surgical and Autopsy Pathology.

The Mount Sinai Medical Center Laboratory performs approximately 1 million tests annually. The core lab, blood bank and venipuncture team are staffed 24 hours / day. Microbiology services are provided 7 days (6am-midnight) with stat testing available by trained clinical lab staff from midnight to 6am. Anatomic Pathology services are provided Monday-Saturday and after hours by on-call personnel.

The Department of Pathology at Mount Sinai Medical Center has an outstanding commitment to teaching by pathology faculty and staff with a strong one on one resident-pathologist interaction. We have a large number of didactic and interactive teaching conferences with pathologists and clinicians which follow the competency-based framework as directed the ACGME.

The Goals and Objectives for each rotation are designed to ensure that the expected competencies are met and that the resident knows what is expected during the rotation. Each rotation trains the resident to provide competent and compassionate PATIENT CARE, enhance the residents’ MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE, INTERPERSONAL and COMMUNICATION SKILLS, and PROFESSIONALISM and educate the resident in PRACTICE BASED LEARNING and SYSTEM BASED PRACTICE. The attainment of these competencies is evaluated by daily observation and evaluation by the Pathologists, by resident participation at formal lectures and conferences both within the Department and throughout the institution, teleconferences and interactions and communication with physicians from other disciplines. At the conclusion of each rotation, these are formally evaluated and discussed with the resident. The success of the program is measured by demonstration of scholarly activity by each resident through publications and participation in poster presentations and floor presentations at local, state, national and international meetings, by daily observation and evaluation by the pathologists, by feedback from interacting physicians from external rotations, and from other specialties and from results of performance in external examinations. All of these are discussed with the resident at the time of formal six month evaluations although each activity is discussed with the resident on a daily basis. As a final evaluation, performance on the Specialty Board Examination in anatomic and clinical pathology is used as an outcome measure. Results of that examination along with the other evaluations are used to modify the program as needed to improve the teaching of the competencies.
