For every one person living in a nursing home, there are three individuals of equal need who reside at home. Many of these individuals do not receive the primary medical care they need on a regular basis. Mount Sinai Medical Center's Geriatric Housecall Program allows homebound elderly patients to receive regular medical care in the comfort and privacy of their own homes, before conditions escalate and require emergency room treatment and/or hospitalization.
Research shows that patients who are treated at home by an interdisciplinary medical team require fewer hospitalizations, emergency room visits and nursing home admissions, and have an overall lower mortality rate. Housecall programs also have been shown to save patients more than one hundred dollars a month.
Mount Sinai's housecall team includes specialize geriatric physicians and nurse practitioners who work closely with Miami-Dade County home care services and community agencies to ensure high-quality, safe medical care is provided.
