Breast Ultrasound

Breast ultrasound (also called sonography) is a noninvasive imaging technology used to help doctors see the breast’s internal structures. This procedure is often used to further examine a particular portion of the breast after a mammogram has identified an area of concern. Breast ultrasound can also be used to evaluate breast lumps to determine if they are solid masses or fluid-filled cysts. The technique uses sound waves to form an image (sonogram) of the breast’s internal structures, and it can show all areas of the breast, even those hard to visualize with a mammogram, such as the area nearest the chest wall. The technique can also identify small lesions.
