Advanced Radiation Therapy

Mount Sinai’s commitment to offering our patients the most promising treatments means that our radiation oncologists are constantly researching, learning about and applying new and refined methods of treatment. Advanced internal radiation, or brachytherapy, is not a new technique, but recent applications of it are showing extreme promise. Among these are:

• MammoSite radiation therapy, in which radiation is applied to cancer from within the breast. Mount Sinai was one of the first medical centers in the nation to use this therapy, which greatly reduces treatment time.
  
  
• Prostate seed implantation is another method by which internal radiation is applied to treat cancer. The targeted nature of seed implantation helps reduce radiation damage to surrounding tissue and nerves.
