MOUNT SINAI MEDICAL CENTER NAMES NEW ORTHOPAEDICS CHIEF

MIAMI BEACH, FL - (October 12, 2009) - Marc Umlas, M.D., has been named chief of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center. An expert in minimally invasive surgery, he has been on staff at Mount Sinai since 1995.

Dr. Umlas has developed specialized techniques and instruments for minimally invasive hip and knee replacement surgery. Among his many accomplishments is developing a minimally invasive hip replacement technique that is unique in the extent to which it spares healthy tissue. He has performed hundreds of these procedures over the last decade and has taught the technique to orthopaedic surgeons around the world.

In addition, Dr. Umlas is one of the first physicians in South Florida to offer Birmingham Hip Resurfacing - an ideal option for younger, active patients that resurfaces the hip instead of replacing it. He also developed and performs a number of minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques for knee surgery and knee replacement that involve smaller incisions and minimal muscle and bone trauma.

A graduate of Stanford Medical School, Dr. Umlas did his orthopaedic surgical residency at Harvard Medical School and later completed dual fellowships in joint replacement at Harvard Medical School and Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. Dr. Umlas is a clinical assistant professor at the Florida International University School of Medicine. He has authored numerous articles and chapters in his area of expertise, and he lectures internationally, nationally and locally.
