CUTTING-EDGE CANCER RESEARCH PROGRAM AT MOUNT SINAI MEDICAL CENTER
WINS MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR GRANT
AND CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF ADVANCING THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER
Miami Beach, FL (October 2007) Mount Sinai's Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) was awarded $3 million from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to continue promising cancer research and clinical trials. The grant enables means Mount Sinai to provide patients access to cutting-edge cancer treatments and novel cancer prevention therapies years before they are widely available. This is Mount Sinai's 20th year participating in the prestigious national CCOP initiative, which brings new research, resources and hope to patients and physicians fighting cancer in our community. Mount Sinai is home to the only CCOP in the state of Florida conducting progressive research into cancer in adults, and one of only 63 CCOP sites nationwide.
The NCI established the CCOP initiative after recognizing that more than 80 percent of cancers in the U.S. are diagnosed and treated in local communities. The CCOP at Mount Sinai brings substantial cancer research into our community and gives patients in South Florida the chance to participate in clinical trials and thereby gain access to many promising treatments, according to Rogerio Lilenbaum, M.D., lead CCOP investigator at Mount Sinai and direct of the hospital's thoracic oncology program.
In its 20 years of research, the Mount Sinai CCOP has been involved in many studies that have broken ground for new treatments for cancer. Mount Sinai physicians choose to participate in the cancer trials they believe are most promising.
There are roughly 60 clinical trials under way at Mount Sinai at this time. The advantage to patients is not only in access to the most cutting-edge treatments, but the fact that Mount Sinai's physicians are constantly educated about the newest and most effective cancer treatments.
